Compassionate Cross-Cultural Communication - August 2021
Have you ever been part of a conversation where things went wrong and you walked away thinking to yourself, “they just don’t get it!” or “that’s not how I would have spoken!” Effective and compassionate communication is not always easy, and cross-cultural communication can be even more challenging.
Across an interactive, three-hour learning session you will have the opportunity to understand what culture is, why our culture matters to cross-cultural communication, and ten strategies for compassionate cross-cultural communication. You will also analyze case studies based on real experiences to explore how to put the ten strategies for compassionate cross-cultural communication into practice

At the end of this course you will be able to:
- Describe what culture is and why culture matters
- Engage in self-reflection about their own culture and how their culture impacts their values and beliefs related to communication.
- Describe what cross-cultural communication is and how/ why it can be challenging.
- Identify and implement the ten strategies for compassionate cross-cultural communication.

Individuals who complete the four courses listed below, offered by the Human Rights and Inclusion Team via the Centre for People Development, will receive a certificate of completion:

- Building Thriving Communities: Intersectional Anti-Racism: Anti-Oppression for Social Justice
Folks who have completed all four courses will gain a critical race analysis, share common language & understanding, will have demonstrated their commitment to improving equity, diversity and inclusion at HHS, and will have the tools to be Allies and equity champions on their teams. Folks who complete all four courses may be invited to participate on equity, diversity and inclusion related committees, task forces, etc.
